I know how to add audio to a song/hymn slide but is it possible to add an audio file to an image file please

Yes this works OK on a presentation or song but I cant get it to work when I add a picture from media to the schedule and try to drag and drop audio on to it

You would have to assign the image to a blank song file and then drag and drop the audio file on to it.
